Democratic Transformation, Technology Law, and the Pulse of East Asia
(Please note: South Korea is currently one of our "De Novo / Coming Soon" destinations in the CLE Abroad Labs. The details below represent our vision for this program as we actively build and refine the itinerary).
South Korea offers a compelling setting to explore a remarkable national transformation—from a war-torn peninsula to a vibrant democracy, technological powerhouse, and global cultural phenomenon. From the bustling political heart of Seoul to the dramatic maritime hubs of the southern coast, South Korea provides an unparalleled environment to study the intersection of rapid modernization, deep historical tradition, and international law.
Why S. Korea
We are investing our time in developing a South Korea program because the country stands at the forefront of vital global conversations, balancing constitutional evolution with rapid technological advancement and complex geopolitical realities. Our team is hard at work curating engagements that will dive into uniquely localized yet globally impactful legal debates, including:
Democracy & The Rule of Law: Examining Korea’s constitutional structure, the separation of powers, and the legislative process through the lens of its dramatic democratic transformation.
The DMZ & International Peace: Studying the Korean Armistice, international law, and the legal framework of a "frozen conflict" at the heavily fortified Demilitarized Zone.
Corporate, Tech, & Maritime Law: Exploring foreign investment regulations, AI and privacy regulation in East Asia, and Korea’s massive global shipping economy.
Environmental & Cultural Protections: Discussing environmental law and UNESCO heritage protections on Jeju Island and in historic royal districts.
Who is this for?
Once launched, this program will be ideal for legal professionals, corporate and tech attorneys, international relations scholars, and any culturally curious travelers eager to experience East Asia's dynamic legal and social landscape. It will be beautifully suited for mixed audiences, blending rigorous academic engagement with world-class cultural exploration and unforgettable cuisine.
As we finalize the itinerary, participants can expect an inspiring balance of high-level institutional briefings and deep cultural immersion. Anticipated engagements include discussions at the National Assembly, the Ministry of Justice, the Constitutional Court, and major international law firms. Culturally, expect to experience the grandeur of Joseon Dynasty palaces like Gyeongbokgung, wander the preserved Bukchon Hanok Village, and enjoy vibrant culinary traditions—from street food and traditional Korean BBQ to soju tasting and exploring dynamic night markets.

Our draft itineraries are currently designed with Seoul as the core city:
Seoul (The Core Base): The political and legal capital. Programs will focus on constitutional law and modern governance, pairing visits to the Supreme Court and National Assembly with royal heritage sites, the War Memorial of Korea, and excursions to the DMZ.
Programs are highly recommended during the Spring (April to early June) and Fall (September-November) when the climate is mildest and the chances of rain are lower. This helps to avoid the humidity and crowds in the summer and colder temperatures in January and February.
